Consort music by Alfonso Ferrabosco the Younger and Frederik Neyrinck
Frederik Neyrinck: Tanzsuite Nr. 2
Tanzsuite
Anyone who has ever listened to Ferrabosco’s Pavan on Seven Notes knows what melancholy this Englishman with Italian roots is capable of: sad and comforting, dark and healing. With a melody of only seven notes that constantly spins on its own axis, Ferrabosco evoked exactly what human beings are constantly eluding. An age-old desire: resonance between the earthly and the supernatural, between man and the heavenly spheres that transcend him.
The recorder ensemble B-Five takes Ferrabosco's autumnal pavanes, written at the intersection between Renaissance and Baroque, as the starting point for a programme full of new, contemporary resonance. Composer Frederik Neyrinck wrote a suite especially for B-Five that dances around the pavanes of Ferrabosco. Ferrabosco's fine lines, subtle rhythms and beautiful melodic finds form the starting point for new musical cells, which Neyrinck lets evolve in his own way in a stream of what seem to be repetitions - but they really aren't. The recorders of B-Five switch between homogeneous Renaissance sounds and a completely contemporary sound palette. Sometimes Neyrinck's music responds to Ferrabosco's pavanes, sometimes both flow into each other organically, and sometimes they interrupt each other abruptly. Sometimes with all recorders at the same time, sometimes with only a few.
In recent years, Frederik Neyrinck has emerged as one of Flanders' most prominent young composers, with works for music theatre (Zolang hij niet zichzelve kent, i c o n, Homo Deus Frankenstein) and chamber music ensembles (I Solisti del Vento, Revue Blanche). With his Bruegel Bilder (Transit Festival Leuven, 2016), he already proved that he could make the recorder consort sing surprisingly and delicately. He continues that research with this new composition.
